HOW IT WORKS

The Science Behind GLP-1 Medications (like Ozempic)
Dive into the evidence that supports the safety and effectiveness of GLP-1 medications, and discover how they can revolutionize your path towards a healthier, happier life.

Ozempic® 101
What is Ozempic?
Ozempic is a brand-name medication containing the active ingredient semaglutide. It belongs to a class of drugs known as glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, or "GLP-1s" for short. This medication is used to help regulate blood sugar levels and support weight loss.
How does Ozempic work?
Ozempic works by slowing down the digestion process, which helps you feel full for a longer period. As a GLP-1 receptor agonist, it mimics a hormone that your body naturally produces to regulate blood sugar levels and promote weight loss.
Do you prescribe Ozempic for weight loss?
Health care professionals in our program may prescribe Ozempic off-label if they determine it is an appropriate treatment option for a particular patient based on their medical history review and baseline lab test assessment.
How can Ozempic help with weight loss?
Ozempic acts similarly to a natural hormone that your body uses to regulate blood sugar levels and appetite. This action helps in resetting your biological set point, enabling you to maintain a new, lower weight more effectively.
How do you take Ozempic?
Ozempic is administered using a prefilled injection pen containing multiple doses. If prescribed, you or someone in your household will set the prescribed dose and then inject it subcutaneously into your abdomen, thigh, or arm once a week. Although the idea of regular injections might seem daunting, the Ozempic pen features a small needle designed to minimize discomfort. You will also receive detailed instructions on using the injection pen, and our healthcare providers can offer additional guidance as needed.

Still have questions?
-
GLP-1 receptor agonists are a class of medications that work by mimicking the action of a naturally occurring hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). This hormone helps regulate blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin release and suppressing glucagon release, both of which contribute to lowering blood sugar. Additionally, GLP-1 receptor agonists slow down gastric emptying, which can lead to increased feelings of fullness and reduced calorie intake, aiding in weight loss.
It's crucial to understand that these medications are not meant to replace regular exercise and a nutritious diet. When prescribed a weight-loss medication, healthcare professionals will typically recommend implementing specific lifestyle changes, such as adopting a balanced diet and engaging in regular physical activity. This approach ensures that you maximize the benefits of the medication while effectively managing or preventing any associated chronic conditions.
-
We can help you determine if weight loss medication is suitable for you based on your medical history, current health status, and weight loss goals. To qualify for prescription weight loss medication at FH Health, our clinicians carry out a thorough screening process. This evaluation includes verifying specific Body Mass Index (BMI) criteria, ensuring the absence of particular medical conditions, and confirming a history of unsuccessful weight loss attempts through lifestyle modifications alone.
For those who may not be suitable candidates for weight loss medication, they can still benefit from our medication-free weight loss program designed to support their journey towards a healthier lifestyle.
-
Common side effects of GLP-1 weight loss medications include upset stomach, nausea, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, vomiting, headache, and fatigue. These symptoms are often most pronounced during the initial weeks of treatment and generally subside or disappear as your body adjusts to the medication. Your healthcare professional will establish a suitable dosing schedule to manage any side effects and can make adjustments to your care plan as needed.
More severe side effects are rarer but possible. Serious side effects include:
Thyroid cancer - The FDA has issued its most serious warning (called a BOXED WARNING) that GLP-1s may be associated with a type of thyroid cancer called medullary thyroid carcinoma. So far, this side effect has primarily been seen in laboratory studies using rodents, so the risk to humans has not been determined.
Pancreatitis
Gallbladder disease
Rapid heartbeat
Severe allergy (hypersensitivity)
Low blood sugar
Vision problems (diabetic retinopathy)
Kidney disease
Suicidal thoughts or behaviors

Using a Health Savings Account (HSA) for weight loss program expenses depends on the specific program and your HSA plan. Generally, if a weight loss program is recommended by a healthcare provider to treat a specific medical condition, it may be considered a qualified medical expense. Always consult with your HSA plan administrator for guidance.
-
There are no specific foods that you must avoid while taking Ozempic. However, maintaining a balanced diet and following your healthcare provider's dietary recommendations are crucial for achieving the best results from the medication.
-
The most common side effects of Ozempic include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and decreased appetite. These side effects are often mild and may improve over time as your body adjusts to the medication. If side effects persist or worsen, consult your healthcare provider.
